This is the second book in the Arabus family series. Set in the 1700s, Daniel Arabus and his mother are being kept as slaves despite the fact that Daniel's father earned enough money to buy their freedom during the Revolutionary War. Their captors are keeping the notes from them. Daniel tries to steal the notes back and is caught. He ends up on a ship bound for the West Indies to be sold into slavery. In New York, he jumps ship and swims ashore. This begins his dangerous journey to freedom.

Instructional Activities

• Students will make a map showing Daniel's journey. Use online mapping tools or graph paper.

• Daniel's courage and determination helped him survive many challenges. List the obstacles that he faced and what helped him overcome each.

• Create an online journal for Daniel Arabus, with Daniel telling his story as it happens, day by day.
